Guti Fraga & Nos do Morro

Actor and social activist Guti Fraga founded the Nós do Morro Group 30 years ago to bring cultural training and performance to the favela of Vidigal. He created the 7 O’Clock Show, Campinho Show, and Vidigal Show to enrich the neighborhood and provide an audience for the singers, dancers, actors, and poets that he trained. Guti’s work is an act of resistance against the discrimination, violence, and snobbery that inhabitants of the favelas face from officials and elites.

Nós do Morro brings the community together, allowing the people to release their minds of the fear and stress of the daily struggle to survive, while giving children, youth, and all adults a safe and fun place to learn new skills, and express their individuality through creative performance.

Many young people learned to read and write through participating in Guti’s performance arts programs. Dozens of participants leveraged the training to develop career paths in the arts and entertainment industry.
