Jongo da Serrinha

Jongo da Serrinha is an important cultural and community organization led by the women of the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Serrinha. The cultural group was founded in 2000 with the objective to preserve and nourish the Jongo rhythm and dance from Congo/Angola that arrived in the coffee plantations in Brazil in the times of slavery. In 2005, the Jongo was register as an Immaterial Patrimony of the South-East of Brazil at the National Historic Patrimony Institute (IPHAN)

The Casa do Jongo is a critical community center for sharing the Jongo music and dance with the next generation. Led entirely by women from the community, the Casa do Jongo is a refuge for the entire community. In addition to the Jongo, the center provides classes in education, capoeira, and other skills.

The women of Jongo da Serrinha are an important part of the resistance against the growing discrimination against African culture in contemporary Brazil. Support the resistance and these brave women.

OUR TEAMWORK

Rise Up & Care provided two grants to Jongo da Serrinha to support the educational and cultural activities in the Casa do Jongo.

Rise Up & Care arrived at a very important moment for Jongo da Serrinha, in which we were making a great expansion: leaving our small headquarters in Morro da Serrinha still understanding what life would be like in this new Casa do Jongo and to deal with all the demands that this would bring. Rise Up funded so many activities in the new cultural center, it was a miracle.
